Background
The United Nations Fund for Recovery, Reconstruction and Development in Darfur, a multi-donor trust fund established in 2015 to support the efficient implementation of key components of the Darfur Development Strategy (DDS) in pursuit of the overall objective of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD) “to support the transition from humanitarian assistance to recovery and development”.
The UNDF supports 12 Foundational and Short-Term activities (FaST), implemented in Darfur by 13 UN agencies and entities, in partnership with the Government of Sudan. A total commitment of US$88.5 million by the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD), has been supporting these 12 FaST activities. The projects officially started in February 2016.
At the beginning of 2019, after more than two and a half years, the FaST Activities are facing their final stage of implementation and results started to become more visible. Some of the project, they have even finalized the implementation of activities. During the implementation phase, the Technical Secretariat have been collecting material: interviews, photos, videos and stories that are feeding communication materials and public information products.
At this stage the UN Darfur Fund is facing the phase of the production of final communication materials so the activity in the office is increasing. Final knowledge sharing products are also being designed.
It´s an exciting moment for the FaST Activities and for the UNDF Technical Secretariat. This moment of intense activity is also considered suitable time for an Intern, who is interested in communications, to accompany the multiple tasks that the office is facing and acquire important knowledge and experience from these tasks. At the same time an Intern can contribute considerably with a fresh professional perspective to the different duties of the current production process, making an internship a win-win situation for both: The Intern and the Technical Secretariat.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assisting with the documentation archive of the UN Darfur Fund Technical Secretariat with filing pictures and video footage from the different FaST Activities of the DDS;
  • Reviewing pictures and video footage from the different phases of implementation of the FaST Activities and help translate and subtitle;
  • Supporting in close collaboration with UNDP Communication team the production (design and publication) of final documentation products that reflect projects and the UN agencies work when FaST Activities have been implemented in Darfur;
  • Supporting drafting and translating final communication products (reports, videos, stories) into English or Arabic.

SKILLS TO DEVELOP:

Basic skills that could be developed through the practical experience of the work that the intern will perform during the internship at the UN Darfur Fund Technical Secretariat:

  • Develop skills in choosing and presenting a collection of photographs to tell a story showing the implementation of development activities and the work of UN agencies;
  • Develop skills to identify key messages through interviews and suitable b-roll video footage to craft a video narrative showing a development project or the implementation of an activity.
  • Develop skills to produce a short documentary video films of between 1 to 5 minutes showing the implementation and the results of a development project and the activity of an UN Agency and or its implementing partners.
  • Develop skills to manage social media accounts for development purposes and website content management system.

3.     Effective verbal and written skills; ability to draft short memos and conduct presentations.

4.     Integrity and impartiality, ability to work with local community, stakeholders and colleagues of various origins.

5.     Ability to convey difficult issues and positions to senior officials, proactively seek guidance and make clear recommendations to line managers.

Required Skills and Experience
REQUIRED /PROVEN INTERESTS:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in Audio-visual Communication, Visual Arts, Development, International Relations, Politics, Peace Building or another relevant field;
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme

(minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent);

  • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.
  • Knowledge of and/or interest in Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premier, After Effects and Photoshop video and photo editing soft-wares;
  • Excellent level of Arabic and English languages.
